Commerce

Posted in Musings at 1:16 pm by Nibuca

Once upon a time I had two characters in World of Warcraft. Tikataka was slowly gaining levels and would send all of her extra loot to Freya, a bank toon parked in Ironforge. As Tikataka gained in levels the loot got better and generated bigger sales on the Auction House. Additionally, Tikataka was a leatherworker and was seeing modest profits by reselling crafted leather goods.

The one day.. I decided to make an alt (Tikah).. and then another(Monneh).. and then I decided that Tikah, my herbalist/alchemist needed to -not- do herbalism.. so I switched everyone’s professions around. All money generation ground to a halt. Instead I spent all of my hoarded gold to level up Tikah as a leatherworker, Monneh as a tailor, and Obliette (a new alt) as a herbalist/alchemist.

I had just finished skilling up all my alts when I decided to concentrate on a single toon.. and call her my main.. so I created a new toon and have spent the last two weeks grinding Tatia up to level 26. It’s only in the last few levels that she’s started to get good loot but since she’s an Enchanter she’s been disenchanting it instead of sending it to my bank alt.

Two good things happend two days ago..
- first, I figured out how to get Enchantrix correctly setup so it will show me the potential disenchant value on green/blue/purple items close to the Auctioneer potential sale value. This has allowed me to make more intelligent decisions about selling things instead of always disenchanting.
- second, I bought a recipe from a vendor for 4 silver.. and happened to notice that Auctioneer says that the recipe sells on Auction House for 3-7 gold. Woot! Happy day! The vendor sells an unlimited amount of the recipes.. to start with I bought 5 copies of the recipe. I put one up on AH at about 7PM yesterday.. and it was sold by midnight.

So I’ve found my money maker. No, I won’t share the recipe name. :)
So I guess my new money making scheme is a combination of a buy-low/sell-high and reselling loot. I think I’ll add the resale of enchanting reagents also. Hopefully this will allow me to buy a mount at 40.. hmmm except that you don’t have to pay for the Paladin mount. Hmm.. maybe I’ll just say I’m saving for a flying mount. That’s it.

Confused about Shield Spikes

Posted in Musings at 3:26 pm by Nibuca

Shield Spike
Confuzeled.

[Iron Shield Spike]
Requires Blacksmithing (150)
Use: Attaches an Iron Spike to your shield that deals damage every time you block with it.
Charges: 1 (Expendable)
3 sec cast
Sells for 2 Silver 50 Copper to vendors
Item Level 30
Source: Recipe

So.. “Item Level 30″ does that mean I have to be 30 before I can use it.. or what?

Starting the long slow road to 30

Tatia at level 24So now I’m following Youri’s Level 20-30 Alliance Leveling Guide. The guide is geared to go from level 20-30. Because of the Paladin quest and other recent instances Tatia started the night at level 23. Not a huge problem. I just figure a couple of the early quests will be green to me.

Unfortunately I’m finding a lot of frustration with the guide.

The guide suggests you get “The tower of Althalaxx” to drop off in Ashenvale. Unfortunately, there are -many- “The tower of Althalaxx” quests. The first one you get is “The tower of Althalaxx” which has you run north of Auberdine to Balthule Shadowstrike (55,25) at the tower of Althalaxx. On turn in you get the quest “The tower of Althalaxx” to collect 4 Worn Parchments from the warlocks around the tower of Althalaxx. On that turn in you get the quest “The tower of Althalaxx” which -finally- sends you to Ashenvale.

The guide doesn’t mention this.. so I have the first “The tower of Althalaxx” but I’m down in Ashenvale so I can’t complete it.

The guide then suggests that you get the quest “Trek to Ashenvale” from Sentinel Selarin. I couldn’t find Sentinel Selarin. But I spent a very frustrated 10 minutes looking for her.

The guide also seems to be assuming more familiarity with Azeroth than I have. Directions like “Go east to Iris lake and get Elune’s tear.” would be more helpful with coordinates. I’m muddling through. Hopefully it will get better.

At the end of the night Tatia dinged 24 1/2 and found out that there’s no Paladin trainer in Darnassus so sailed off to Exodar for training (very convenient them being right at the end of the back door ramp).

Feeling the Tankadin Love

WowInsider posted Paladin Tanking 101.

I just wish some of these guides addressed the path on the way to 70. Yes, it’s nice to know what I can do at 70.. but that’s 40+ levels away.

Getting all defensive

Resource:
Defense and Mitigation, how it all works

Ugh! Math hard.

Damage Avoidance - The ability of my toon to avoid getting hit.
Damage Reduction - The ability of my toon to take less damage once she is hit.

I tried REALLY hard to work out the formula’s and figure out Tatia’s Miss, Dodge, Hit, Crit etc percentage chances. Finally I gave up. There’s just too much assumed knowledge. I’ll possibly try again at a later time. Right now I’m planning to install an addOn that (supposedly) does the math for me. Yeah for technology.

Azeroth paladin lowbie world tour

Posted in Tatia at 1:09 pm by Nibuca

Last night, Tatia dinged 23 1/2.

Wow. I can’t imagine completing the Paladin quests without a supportive guild. For West Kingdom guild night, guildies logged on with their “lowbies” (~level 20) to help me complete the level 20 paladin weapon quest. We literally crossed the globe three times.

Bloodwatch -> Westfall -> Stormwind -> Westfall (need to bank everything not critical)(planning for the phat loot that was going to fill all my bags to overflow).
Run Deadmines.
Westfall -> Loch Modan (get ore shipment from ogres and have it refined)
Loch Modan -> Menethil Harbor -> Hillsbrad. (pick up first aid books) -> Silverpine Forest
Run Shadowfang Keep. (acquire hammer from stables)
Silverpine Forest -> Menethil Harbor
Hop boat to Auberdine.
Auberdine -> Ashenvale.
Run to Blackfathom Depths. (acquire a tainted gem from Nagas)
Ashenvale -> Auberdine (get gem cleansed)
Hop boat to Menethil Harbor.
Menethil Harbor -> Ironforge (have hammer crafted outside the gates of Ironforge)
Ironforge -> Stormwind (Guildie in SW enchanted hammer with +7 damage)

I’m happy to say that I have acquired “phat loot” and [item]Verigan’s Fist[/item], a hammer that in testing :) critted a Stormwind rat for 258. Go me.

Ending their world…

Posted in Tatia at 3:39 pm by Nibuca

Despite dashing ahead and achieving level 21, Tatia still had quite a few level 18-20 quests from Bloodmyst Isles. It was tempting to just drop these quests and just start on quests in another area.. but this violated my sense of completeness. After researching the quest log I found that there was one chain of quests with some real meat.. and then a couple of collection quests.

YAEO: why Paladins are so smoking-hot sexy

Posted in Musings at 11:10 am by Nibuca

Blood Elf level 70 Palidin 30/31/0 Regis on Sunstrider (EU). Holy/Protection. How can you not just love it?

He identified useful equipment:
[Petrified Lichen Guard] lvl 62, poisons when it blocks (requires Honored with Sporeggar)
[Figurine of the Colossus] lvl 70, heals you for +120 per block.

Slow, Flat-footed and Incompetent

Posted in Bawk Bawk at 4:21 pm by Nibuca

I started playing Warcraft in January. It’s March now.
I have Alt-o-holism. Which means I have a semi-active family of 6 toons, 2 bank alts and Tatia, my new main.
It’s only been three months.. and not one of my toons had ever been in the battlegrounds.

Last night I took Illyah (19 BE Paladin) into Warsong Gulch. I wanted to get a taste of it before we went there tonight with Bawk Bawk.

I though I was an ok player. PvE I am.

PvP, I suck. Major suckage. Beyond the ends of the virtual world suckage. Man-o-man.

So many deaths.. so many “???” “we have a flag?”, “how do you get the flag?” “Oh, down there… those people in red.. oh, ok I bet they’ll attack me.” “ow ow ow ow ow”

PvE: Identify Mob to kill. Run up to mob. Strike mob or just get in their aggro range. Mob turns on you, stands in front of you and you exchange blows like civilized folks.

PvP: Identify Alliance drones to PWN. Edge towards Aliance drones. Identify their class.. Identify what I (little paladin) can do to their class. Run up to drone. Attempt to strike drone. Oh, it’s behind me. Turn around. Ow. Oh, it’s behind me. Ow. Ow. Turn around. Oh hey, I’m low on health.. I should bubble.. where is that button. Oh, there.. bubble. Hmm low mana.. ok, I’ll run away.. hey.. he’s still chasing me. Ow ow ow. *sigh* ok, I’ll wait for the ressurrection.

I -almost- killed one alliance player. I -did- do an impressive amount of healing (once I realized that my awesome plinkage wasn’t going to kill them).

After 3 frustrating battles I went back out to PvE. Happily I PWN furry little Mob butt.

I hope this gets better.

“KEK!”

Posted in Tatia at 10:52 am by Nibuca

Blessings of the Light be upon you and your household!

On this, the first day of Spring do I, Tatia late of Exodar, send to you fond greetings from the golden fields of Westfall. It is with great excitement that I share my latest doings.

As you know, not long ago I awakened from cryogenic sleep in the fields of Azuremyst Isle. Upon my awakening, and with the urging of my elders, I set out to help cleanse the land of the taint put upon it by the ruptured crystals from the Exodar. I had the great pleasure to meet and befriend natives of this new land. They were of invaluable help in our efforts.

At the urgings of my new friends, natives of Azeroth, I made a pilgrimage across this land and explored the lands of Darkshore, Teldrassil, and Ashenvale. At their further urgings I made the long voyage to the East Kingdom. From there I treked across Southshore and Loch Modan to the great Dwarven city of Ironforge and then finally (using the curious gnomish invention of the “tram”) I was able to visit the city of Stormwind. We are truly blessed to find sanctuary in such a rich and diverse world.

While in the city of Stormwind I met Duthorian Rall, a noble of their clergy. At his urging I traveled to Westfall to check on the health and wellfare of Daphne Stillwell (her husband has been away for some time fighting the scourge of this great land).

While I visited with Daphne she was assailed by waves of foul Defias bandits. Through the grace of the light and the help of one of my new Azerothian friends, Baldwyne (a holy warrior of great skill and renown), we were able to fight off the foul attackers and guarantee Daphne’s safety.

Assured of her continue’d safety, Daphne charged me to return to Stormwind and give news of her good health to Duthorian Rall. On my way across the golden fields of Westfall to the flightmaster I ran afoul of more of the wretched Defias who seem to infest that area. First one, then two attacked me. I easily defeated the first one but, seeing her end near, the second Defias thug fled like a coward. She ran away screaming like a wounded bunny and sent back to me FOUR of her foul bretheren. Besieged I fought valiantly. In truth I think is is only my youth that caused me anxiety. As a noble warrior of the light I could easily best these five Defias who attacked me but up until now I had never had cause to test my resiliance.

Gaining control of my emotions I prayed to the Light and blasted them with holy energy. On and on we fought and in truth I had just decided to pray for Divine Protection and heal myself when out of nowhere a blast of fire hit the Defias. Two then three fireballs joined the first until the five attacking Defias all lay bloodied and dead at my feet.

Relieved I turned to thank my saviors (though in truth I think I would have defeated the Defias. But it’s only polite to thank saviors when they arrive) only to find myself nose-to-tusk with not one, but TWO trolls. Large, green, tusked trolls. My blood froze and my limbs grew stiff.

My new Azerothian friends had regaled me with tales of the trolls. Their savagery and ruthlessness seemed truly frightening to a young Draenei. Here I was face-to-tusk with creatures of lore. We stood facing one another for a tense moment. Then I remember that “good manners make friends of enemies” (and I remember the tales of Brin who I’ve heard might be a Tauren in Dwarf-ish disguise!!!) and gestured my thanks to them.

“Tatia thanks you.”

They paused for a moment and then the larger of the two said “KEK” and began laughing uproarously. They both then waved to me cheerfully and loped off into the hills of Westfall.

So I send to you this day.. if you ever run across a Troll… say “KEK” and I believe you have just told him to laugh out loud.

Your servant in the name of the Light,

Tatia

Tatia dinged 21 last night and finished the first part of the lvl 20 paladin quests. I got the [Bastion of Stormwind] though in truth I believe the [Arctic Buckler] which Baldwyne had sent me in the mail is a better shield. [Correction: looks like this was picked up in Black Fathom Deeps, not sent in the mail.]

The point is moot though since the next Paladin questline that I’ll be starting will end up with me having the [item]Verigan’s Fist[/item], the “best pally weapon through level 39″ which is a two-handed mace. I guess in the meantime (between now and the end of the questline) it’s good to have a great shield.

WRT: proc.

I found this thread “What does proc mean?“. Essential a thing “procs” when it does the thing it says it has a chance to do.

Ie, Tatia has [Darkwater Talwar]. That sword can be said to proc when it casts a shadow bolt at the enemy for 25 shadow damage.
