  • Good info, but I’m left wondering… is all that health worth giving up on spell damage? We’re talking about a total of 186 spell damage total normally, and with Gloves – Spellpower, maybe 206. Most places I’ve hit up say 10k unbuffed is plenty, and I agree.

    One thing that I think can be swapped out a lot is using gems other than Solid Stars of Elune. If the socket bonus is something that contributes to our tanking, it might be better if we use gems that benefit tanking overall, thus allowing us to swap out gear for stuff more suited towards paladin tanking and less for warrior tanking (which a lot of what the gear here has +strength which is almost worthless to us). One gem that I think would be quite worthwhile to consider using is an Enduring Talasite (+4 Defense rating and +6 Stamina at http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24062 ) for yellow sockets.

    Anyway, I’m going to be going through the list of gear today, and I’ll put together what I consider to be a more paladin-tanking oriented set of gear. Still uncrushable, but with 10k health and a lot more spell damage.

    Also, while we’re on gems, check out http://wowgems.jponrails.com/cut_gems/list :D

    Another good site I think you’d like (if you don’t already know about it) is http://www.failsafedesign.com/maintankadin/index.php Yes, it’s a tanking forum. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy being there. :D

    I realize you’re just posting something you found for yourself and everyone else, and thank you for doing so. :)

    Comments good!

    I believe the above list is the first page of a forum thread that went on for 20+ pages. I haven’t yet had time to comb through the thread (a gal’s got to work at some point). I plan to keep updating this list (and add a “how to acquire this gear guide”) as I figure it out. This is just a good starting place.

    I’ve still got 19 levels to go (made 51 last night. Yippee) but I’ve got my eyes on the prize.

  • Woo! Finally finished. Now, here’s my plan:

    Head: Felsteel Helm replaced by [Helm of the Righteous] ( http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28285 ) with a [Powerful Earthstorm Diamond] ( http://www.wowhead.com/?item=25896 ) in the meta socket and an Enduring Talasite in the yellow socket..

    Shoulders: [Spaulders of the Righteous] remain the same, save for a [Glowing Nightseye] in the red socket.

    Chest: Jade-Skull Breastplate replaced by [Breastplate of the Righteous] ( http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28203 ) with a [Glowing Nightseye] ( http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24056 ) in the red socket, [Enduring Talasite] in the yellow socket, and a [Solid Star of Elune] in the blue socket.

    Hands: Felsteel Gloves replaced by [Gauntlets of the Righteous]. (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27535&locale=enUS )

    Belt: Girdle of the Irremovable replaced by [item]Sha’tari Vindicator’s Waistguard[/item].

    Legs: [item]Timewarden’s Leggings[/item] remain the same, save for a [Glowing Nightseye] in the red socket and an [Enduring Talasite] in the yellow socket.

    Feet: Boots of the Colossus are replaced by [Boots of the Righteous Path]. ( http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29254 ) Note: I made the mistake of trashing Flesh Beast’s Metal Greaves, which are really awesome, and would have been perfect. For others, take these and you can drop some [Enduring Talasite]s in place of Solid Stars of Elune for non socket bonus items.

    Ring: Protector’s Mark of the Redemption is replaced by [item]Andormu’s Tear[/item]. ( http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29323 )

    Trinket: Figurine of the Colossus is replaced by [item]Figurine – Dawnstone Crab[/item]. ( http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24125 ) Only works for Jewelcrafters. If you’re not a Jewelcrafter, aim for [item]Dabiri’s Enigma[/item] ( http://www.wowhead.com/?item=30300 ) which gives very close to the same amount Defense, and still keeps you above 102.4%

    Using what I’ve said here, assuming my math is correct should give me 102.827% avoidance, 116 less stamina (lowering me to 10446 health unbuffed), 92 more intellect (which amounts to 1380 more mana), 33 more point of defense rating, 26 more points of dodge rating, 28 less points of block rating, 35 more points of block value, 125 more spell damage, and 15 more mana/5. In addition to the purely numerical things listed above, I will get a 5% chance to resist stuns, and the two set bonuses for the Righteous set.

  • New gear available from 2.1 allows you to not only top the listed health from this gear, but also get a good amount of spell damage, better INT, and less emphasis on blocking. Check out my updated list here: http://kazielmmo.blogspot.com/2007/05/list-of-stuff-to-get.html

  • Ryan

    Spell damage isnt all that important for a pally tank…

  • Nibuca

    @Ryan
    What makes you say that? I’d love to see your information to back that statement up.

    As far as I can tell, +spell damage adds directly to holy damage. Since most everything the tank is doing is generating holy damage it seems that +spell damage is the obvious choice. More spell damage = more threat.

  • Walkere

    Yes, spell damage is useful to increase your threat generation, but at low levels (200 Spell Dam, and Seal of the Crusader), you can generate plenty of threat.

    I just got my Paladin to level 70, and my goal was about the same – get 11k+ HP, get uncrushable (or close to it), and head off to tank Karazhan for my guild. I’m currently sitting at just over 200 Spell Damage, and I was able to tank the whole place. I held aggro against an epic’ed out Rogue and an epic’ed out Shadow Priest.

    Goal 1 is to survive. Once you have the HP and avoidance to survive tanking, you can divert some points into Spell Damage. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to sacrifice the item value for Spell Damage until you pick up some Karazhan or later epics.

  • Robert

    As far as I have seen, as long as you are uncrushable, the spell dmg from the few pieces of Righteous gear and a good Spelldmg sword w/ spell power enchant is completely sufficient.

  • Might I suggest you label the top of this with what class you’re talking about? I saw plate and tank and thought Warrior ;)

    I don’t have a tank at near-Heroics level myself but I’m wondering:

    Uncrushable != Uncrittable, right? So, does this mean that “if you don’t want to deal with the Heroics before Kara”, it’s actually easier for a tank to gear up to Kara standards than Heroics standards?

    Or is this just one of the differences between a Pally tank and a Warrior tank? :)

  • Nibuca

    Added the label.

    Uncrittable = 490 Defense. This means that mobs level 73(boss ?? level mobs) will not be able to crit you.
    Uncrushable = 102.3% combined avoidance. Add together block, parry, miss (~5%), and dodge to get your combined avoidance. If it’s above 102.3% then you can’t be crushed (crushing blows deal 1.5x damage to you from mobs that are 3 levels higher than you).

    Handy avoidance macro:
    Paladin:

    /script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage(“Need 102.4 combined avoidance. Currently at:”,0.8,0.8,1)
    /script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage(GetDodgeChance()+GetBlockChance() + GetParryChance() +5+(GetCombatRatingBonus(CR_DEFENSE_SKILL) + 20)*0.04,1,0.5,0)

    Warrior:

    /script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage(“Need 102.4 combined avoidance. Currently at:”,0.8,0.8,1)
    /script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage(GetDodgeChance()+GetBlockChance() + GetParryChance() +5+(GetCombatRatingBonus(CR_DEFENSE_SKILL) )*0.04,1,0.5,0)

    I’ve found Heroics to be much harder than Karazhan. There are quite a few Heroics that even now when I’m almost fully Kara geared, I’m not sure we could handle them (any KoT).

  • Wakeman

    One of the limitation mentioned here is: Prefered Stats: intelligence, mana per 5, spell crit, healing, stamina

    which, except stamina, are everything that might look important for a tankadins BUT aren’t important in practice.

    Was the paragraph got hacked?

  • Nibuca

    Whoops. Sorry, I updated it. That was a bad copy/paste from when I updated this list from “list of gear” to “list of stuff to look for in pally tanking”.

  • Sludge

    spell damage is very important, u want about as much spell damage equal to 1/2 your dps’s dps. (read that last part right and it makes sense i promise). otherwise you will have a tough time keeping aggro off of your dps.

  • Jayth

    Kaziel, this is pre-kara, meaning gear to go into Karazhan. 10k would be plenty to OFF TANK, but Paladins aren’t built for that, and 186 spell damage is plenty to main tank Karazhan, unless the player is absolutely awful.

    I’m sorry but you’re wrong.
