Threat

Threat is a re-occurring concern lately. It’s hard to be the “tank” when you aren’t generating enough threat to get the baddies to hit you. Not -entirely- my fault when grouped with others 8+ levels above me… but still a concern.

At level 53, Tatia generates initial threat as follows:

I hit them:
Weapon Damage ([Thrash Blade] with +4 damage enchant) (66-124 (avg 95) white damage/2.70 seconds)
Judged Seal of Righteousness (131-143 (avg 137) holy damage/10 seconds)**

Anytime they hit me (and I don’t dodge or parry)
Retribution Aura (16 holy damage) **

They hit me and I block(5%+30% from Holy shield):(depends on baddie’s hit speed)
[Thorium Shield Spike] (20-30 white damage)
Holy Shield (86 holy damage) **
Blessing of Sanctuary (28 holy damage) **

** Improved Righteous Fury (Holy attack threat increased by 66-110%) (*1.9 for my calculations)

Assuming I always have Holy Shield up:

  • 40% of the time – I run forward and hit the main mob with all I’ve got (Thrash blade + Judged Seal of Righteousness).. And then they turn around and either hit, crit or crush me. The most threat I can generate is (95 + ((137 + 16)*1.9) = ) 385.7 threat.
  • 28% of the time – I run forward and hit the main mob with all I’ve got.. and they turn around and strike at me.. and I block. The most threat I can generate is (95 + (137*1.9) + 25 + (16 + 86 + 28)*1.9 = ) 627.3 threat.
  • 12% of the time – I run forward and hit the main mob with all I’ve got.. and they turn around and miss me (miss/dodge/parry). The most threat I can generate is (95 + (137*1.9) = ) 355.3 threat.
  • 10% of the time – I run forward and miss the mob (mob’s miss+dodge+parry+block) (still hit with Judged Seal of Righteousness) and then they turn around and hit me (hit/crit/crush). The most threat I can generate is (137*1.9 + 16*1.9 =)290.7 threat (+ some mitigated number less than 95 if they blocked).
  • 7% of the time – I run forward and miss the mob (mob’s miss+dodge+parry+block) (still hit with Judged Seal of Righteousness) and then they turn around and strike at me and I block. The most threat I can generate is ( 137*1.9 + 25 + (16 + 86 + 28)*1.9) =) 523.3 threat (+ some mitigated number less than 95 if they blocked).
  • 3% of the time – I run forward and miss the mob (mob’s miss+dodge+parry+block) (still hit with Judged Seal of Righteousness) and then they turn around and miss me (my miss+dodge+parry). The most threat I can generate is (137*1.9 =) 260.3 threat (+ some mitigated number less than 95 if they blocked).

I -love- the threat generated when I block. At least until end-game I’ll do what I can to increase my block percentage and my damage mitigation. When I block, 3 of those numbers get bigger as I add spell damage. If I don’t block, only one does. So I’m thinking the combination of more block/mitigation and more spell damage is the way to go.

Other additions:
[item]Adept’s Elixir[/item]
[Brilliant Wizard Oil]

I’m also planning, after the 2.1 patch is released, a respec so that Tatia will have Avenger’s Shield (Hurls a holy shield at the enemy, dealing 270 to 330 Holy damage, Dazing them and then jumping to additional nearby enemies. Affects 3 total targets. Lasts 6 sec. 30 second cooldown.). It looks like a nice way to front-load threat generation.

NOTE:
– if the baddies aren’t hitting me I generate 61.21 threat per second.
– If the baddies -are- hitting me I generate 109 threat per second.

None of the above included Reckoning, Consecrates, Trinkets, Thrashing or modifier if mob has “Judgement of the Crusader”.
