Where I prove I’m a grrl
It’s stupid.. I know it’s stupid but I can’t help myself.
I have a female dwarf hunter. I don’t love the female dwarf hunter.
I have a female night elf hunter. I like the night elf hunter.. but I’d rather have a Draenei hunter. +1% to hit.. they look prettier.. and I’m -so- over the dark blue Night Elf braid.. and it’s almost embarassing to be yet another night elf hunter.
So last night I DELETED the female dwarf hunter (she was all of level 6 so it didn’t hurt or anything) and immediately make a Draenei hunter. I spent quite a while flipping her looks around.. and then I got stuck on picking a name. Finally I tried “Lilac”. It’s a really pretty name. I thought it was already taken on our server so I didn’t expect it to go through. It went through.
So now I have a newbie Draenei Hunter with the name “Lilac”.
The problem is I really don’t think anytime soon that I’ll have the time to play a new Draenei Hunter up to a decent level.. but I really like the name… in fact I really really like the name. I want to play the name.
This morning on the way into work I’m musing on the luck of having that name free.. and I think to myself “Gosh.. it’s too bad Ette has green hair.. because a little bitty gnome with the light-purple pompom pigtails named ‘Lilac’ would be just uber-precious”. Then it hits me.. “Lilac” … light purple.. sounds like “Lylock” perfect for a warlock.. if only I could change her hair to light purple she’d be the perfect toon to be name Lilac. In fact even without changing her hair I want to make the change. It’s just.. well it’s just silly to justify a name change based on something as flimsy as “gosh I really like it”. And I -know- fiancee is going to give me no end of hell for spending $10 to renaming from “Ette” to “Lilac”. So I waffle about it.
I related my conundrum to a guildie friend (she and I work for the same company). Half way through my description of my problem (in YIM) she marches into my office, and throws a $10 at me and declares it my “Happy 12th Night” present (it’s like Merry Christmas.. kind of an inside joke).
So I guess I’m renaming Ette… And when Wrath of the Lich King comes out.. she is so getting a makeover.
Now I just need to come up with a good name for my new new Draenei hunter.

I have a feeling men are just as sensitive to names. (Whether they will admit it or not)

Coming up with the name is one of my very favorite things about rolling a new alt. I’ll usually fiddle with appearance for less than 2 minutes, but then spend upwards of 20 coming up with the perfect name. Kate Monk’s Onomastikon is one of my favorite sources of inspiration.

Maybe it’s a different stage of life, but wait until you start naming children. Now THAT’S challenging.
And last time I checked, it costs more that $10 to change the name. lol
