Burning Crusades Warlock Spell Hit

[This information is Deprecated. With the 3.0.2 patch the information
below is no longer true. Please check my new article for more pertinent information about Warlock Spell hit.]

On TargetUnlike melee combat, it seems that spells are on a two roll system for hit and crit. The system rolls once to see if you hit.. and then rolls again to see if you crit. This means that if you can’t hit, you can’t crit. Regardless, dots can’t crit. The number one easiest way to increase your DPS is to cut down on the number of spell misses (called resists).

Your hit rate is a combination of your level vs the mob’s level with spell hit rating sprinkled over it. You can only ever get to 99% hit rate on spells. There will always be a 1% chance for the mob to resist. It takes 12.625 points of spell hit rating to improve your hit rate by 1%. Miss rates are different in PVP.

Suppression, a talent at the top of the affliction talent tree reduces your chance to miss with Affliction spells by 2% per talent point (up to 5/5 for 10%). Note, this only effects Affliction spells. Your Destruction spells will be unaffected.

Affliction Spells
Corruption
Curse of Agony
Drain Life
Siphon Life
Unstable Affliction
Seed of Corruption
Curse of Wekness
Curse of Agony
Curse of Recklessness
Curse of Tongues
Curse of Exhaustion
Curse of Elements
Curse of Shadow
Curse of Doom
Fear
Destruction Spells
Shadow Bolt
Searing Pain
Shadowburn
Soul Fire
Incinerate
Immolate

12.625 spell hit rating = 1% spell hit

In her skivvies (without suppression), at level 70 Lilac’s spells will hit a level 70 mob 96% of the time.
This means she needs to “make up” 3% of hit. That’s 38 spell hit rating for her to never miss.

In her skivvies (without suppression), at level 70 Lilac’s spells will hit a level 71 mob 95% of the time.
This means she needs to “make up” 4% of hit. That’s 51 spell hit rating for her to never miss.

In her skivvies (without suppression), at level 70 Lilac’s spells will hit a level 72 mob 94% of the time.
This means she needs to “make up” 5% of hit. That’s 64 spell hit rating for her to never miss.

In her skivvies (without suppression), at level 70 Lilac’s spells will hit a level 73 mob (or skull level boss mob) 83% of the time. This means she needs to “make up” 16% of hit. That’s 202 spell hit rating for her to never miss.

If Lilac has 5/5 in suppression then her Affliction spells will hit a level 73 mob 93% of the time. Her Destruction spells will still only hit 83% of the time. In order to reach 99% with her affliction spells she’ll need to get 76 spell hit rating (6*12.625). At that point her destruction spells will be at 89% hit rate.

In order to hit 99% of the time with both Affliction and Destruction spells Lilac will need 202 spell hit rating. At that point she will no longer need to put any points into Suppression.

as always, nicely explained – so much easier to read than when i tried to do it *sigh*

    ;-)

agreed – clear and simple. I understand it now. We’ll happily consume all the theorycraft you care to send our way.

  • Hehe. You put it better than I did in my blog, that’s for certain.

By ‘in her skivvies’, I assume you mean ‘in her gear’.

I need to respec my suppression points, since I’m ‘overhitting’ (impossible!) with my affliction spells now, due to my spell hit having gone up.

    I hate respeccing. ><

“in her skivvies” literally means “if she stripped off all her clothes and fought in a simple black dress”. IE, this is what you see when gear is no affecting her +spell hit.
