Not quite as bleak

Don’t Panic1. Don’t panic
2. See #1.

I’m not quite sure what’s going on.. but last night I continued to fiddle with Beta.

Findings:
Tatia, my level 70 holy pally, in live is seeing 330 dps on mobs on the Isle.
Tatiå, my level 70 copy of my holy pally, in beta was seeing 558 dps on mobs on the Isle.

This is alot less bleak than yesterday’s tests with the level 80.

OK, now pay attention!!!

I am not trying to create some sort of holy dpser. I accept that Holy is not a DPS spec. That said I want two things:

Thing the first
I would really like to be able to level to 80 as some sort of Holy/Ret hybrid. I want to be able to heal dungeon runs and yet still do adequate dps to level fairly painlessly. I don’t want to be Retribution nor do I want to go Protection. They’re not play styles that interests me. I don’t really want to have to sport two separate gear sets.. but I will if I have to.

Thing the second
When I get to 80 and I am a RAIDING GODDESS I still expect to want to do dailies or grind. To do that I need to have ADEQUATE dps to kill mobs without passing out on my keyboard from boredom. I do not want to have to respec to do this.. and ideally I’ll be able to use the same gear for healing as I do for dailies.. swapping out maybe a weapon/shield for a two-handed weapon.

After I’ve allocated my points to “Things I see as necessary for healing” I plan to pick up those talents that are more DPS oriented. This means I will probably end up as some kind of Holy/Ret hybrid.

That said, current 70 Holy Pally spec in Wrath:
http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?talent=sEA0ghzhVzZZVf0x0Ik

Wrath Holy Pally Fight sequence:
Pre-fight: Retribution Aura, Blessing of Might, Seal of Righteousness (2 min duration)
Fight: Judgement of Wisdom (as good a choice as any)**, Holy Shock. Re-apply each as cooldowns are up.

How it feels:
It seems silly that the Seals only last for 2 mins. I’m puzzled why these aren’t 15-30 min self-buffs. I guess I’m supposed to change seals more often. It’s long enough that I’m going through 3-4 fights before having to refresh.. but short enough that I feel like I need to have them keybound (which uses up alot of keybindings). Seriously.. there’s 6 of them and I’m only using 1-2 normally(SoR 90% of the time, SoW when I’m feeling low in mana).

As mentioned before.. one Judgement is as good as another as far as my DPS goes. So almost universally I’m using Judegment of Wisdom.

I’d really like one more button to push on regular mobs. Here’s the timing on a regular mob:
HS(6 sec cooldown), then JoW(8 sec cooldown), wait 4.5 seconds, HS, wait 1.5 seconds, JoW, wait 4.5 sec, HS, wait 3.5 sec, JoW

Note the several 4.5 seconds of waiting around. I really want another button to push during this time. Based on a commenter from yesterday, when I get it, I’ll add the “shield slam” thingy.. when I have a shield equipped.. but in the meantime.. or when I’m not using a shield.. I guess I’ll just use that time to eat a chip.

Things on the Isle died alot faster on Wrath than they did in live. Usually the wretched guys were killed by the second Holy Shock I threw at them.

Other Observations
Which leads me to another interesting observation. The combat log has been updated so it now shows overheals and overkills. The first time I saw “overkill” I laughed out loud. The entry will say something like the following:

Tatia’s Holy Shock hits Depressed Wretched for 123 (1654 Overkill).

It’s interesting.. but I’m not sure that it’s useful. The overheal number is useful. Expect much more accurate numbers from damage meters/WWS as a result.

A “focus” frame has been added to the default UI. Very interesting. This will make teaching people about “focus” a lot easier.

This is, possibly, the 70 build I plan to use. As I head toward 80, I’ll fill out the rest of the holy talents. I’m currently in Kara/T4/early T5/PVP healing gear. With this spec, you will never run out of mana, you’ll heal almost as well for a 5 man as you do today, and you’ll have the added bonus of being able to drop very, very solid amounts of damage. It’s possible I’ll instead use something like this instead:

    Holy (17 points)

    5/5 Spiritual Focus
    3/3 Healing Light
    5/5 Divine Intellect
    4/5 Illumination

    Protection (0 points)

    None

    Retribution (44 points)

    5/5 Benediction
    2/2 Improved Judgements
    3/3 Heart of the Crusader
    2/2 Improved Blessing of Might
    5/5 Conviction
    3/3 Sanctified Seals
    3/3 Crusade
    3/3 Two-Handed Weapon Specialization
    1/1 Sanctified Retribution
    3/3 Vengeance
    2/2 The Art of War
    1/1 Repentance
    3/3 Judgements of the Wise
    5/5 Fanaticism
    3/3 Sheath of Light

Seriously, ret is better at healing in some ways than holy at this point. Especially with the nerfs to Infusion of Light (no more instant cast HLs) and Divine Plea (0% healing for 15 seconds to get 25% of your mana back) and the buff to Judgments of the Wise (33% mana returned when judging, plus 10 members of your raid get Replenishment), it’s pretty close to no contest. Add in Sheath of Light’s bonus to spellpower based on attack power and crit-based HoT, and it’s hard to see why anyone would go holy, at least until raiding. Even after one starts raiding, there’s a good chance that the level 80 point version of that first build will be a better choice than a 51/20 holy/ret build.

  • Now I understand what you are trying to do. I was stuck on you doing content that is currently on Live. I see now that you are more concerned with leveling post-WotLK. Reading comprehension FTL. Disregard the comment I just made on your previous post. Have a nice day and may the Force……errrr Light be with you :P

I have a bit of the same problem. Im holy right now. but thinking about going prot when I lvl. Im woundering how high the dps will be for a protadin.

When blizzard enables you to have 2 diff spec. Im going full holy for raids and full prot for dailys and stuff.

  • I tried out prot in my crappy prot gear on the PTR in IQD. I found out that DamageMeters seems to work just fine in the PTR so I installed it. My single target DPS was about 300-350. It gets better as you round up more mobs, and the mana regen from BoSanc is really nice. But after coming off of Ret, it felt a little weak and really slow. But, Galoheart has some good things to say about Prot in the Beta, so maybe check that out? Oh yeah single target DPS in Ret is anywhere from 1050-1900 on IQD. I also messed around with the Level 70 Expert Practice Dummy in SW. I did 930dps over a 16min span. Mana regen is no longer an issue for Ret. My cycle could probably have been better as well, and my gear still sucks, so keep that in mind :P
