Affliction Rotation 3.0.2 Scribbles

[Edited: Ok.. so on the commute home it occured to me that the following is somewhat crap. I had a minor brain fart and this won't keep haunt up all the time. Expect something better in the next few posts.]

Noodling a cast sequence. These are probably “boss fight” sequences.. as trash dies too quickly to warrant a decent DoT rotation.

Givens:
Corruption instant cast (gcd), 18 second duration (unless refreshed by Haunt or Drain Life)
Curse of Agony instant cast (gcd), 24 second duration
Siphon Life instant cast (gcd), 30 second duration

Haunt 1.5 second cast, 8 sec cooldown, 12 second duration
Unstable Affliction 1.5 second cast, 15 second duration
Immolate 1.5 second cast, 15 second duration

Cast sequence 1:
Working under the assumption that “all dots up” makes for good dps. This may not be true. It may turn out that losing one dot and gaining one Shadow Bolt/Drain Soul/Drain Life may be preferable. I haven’t done the math yet.

corruption(1.5 gcd),
1.5 cast UA/SL(1.5 gcd), 1.5 cast Immolate/CoA(1.5 gcd), 1.5 cast Haunt, 9 seconds until UA runs out (start next UA cast at 8.5 sec)
1.5 cast UA, 1.5 cast Immolate, 1.5 cast Haunt, 12 seconds until UA runs out (start next UA cast at 10.5 sec)

1.5 cast, UA/SL(1.5 gcd), 1.5 cast Immolate/CoA(1.5 gcd), 1.5 cast Haunt, 9 seconds until UA runs out
1.5 cast UA, 1.5 cast Immolate, 1.5 cast Haunt, 12 seconds until UA runs out (start next UA cast at 10.5 sec)

At the 9/12 second “wait times” I can Life Tap, Drain Life, or Shadow Bolt etc.

This rotation results in 4 seconds of CoA downtime. Is it better to eat the 4 seconds to have a dependable cast rotation.. or should CoA be considered independently?

A wandering dot seems hard to keep up reliably. Especially since it’s one that suffers greatly from being clipped.

[Edited to add: Glyph of Curse of Agony extends the duration of CoA by 4 seconds. This would bring it back into line with the rest of the cast sequence. This is a very sexy glyph.. though it looks like it's not available until Wrath]

[Edited to further add: hrm.. I maybe 1.5 seconds off on my second cast of immolation.. I may need to fiddle with this some more.]

Cast sequence 2:
Same as above except changing to CotEL.

CotEl(1.5 gcd), corruption(1.5 gcd),
1.5 cast UA/SL(1.5 gcd), 1.5 cast Immolate, 1.5 cast Haunt, 11.5 seconds until UA runs out (start next UA cast at 11 sec)
1.5 cast UA, 1.5 cast Immolate, 1.5 cast Haunt, 12 seconds until UA runs out (start next UA cast at 10.5 sec)

1.5 cast, UA/SL(1.5 gcd), 1.5 cast Immolate, 1.5 cast Haunt, 10.5 seconds until UA runs out
1.5 cast UA, 1.5 cast Immolate, 1.5 cast Haunt, 12 seconds until UA runs out

At the “wait times” I can Life Tap, Drain Life, Shadow Bolt.

This rotation removes CoA entirely.. and if perfectly cast, results in 100% uptime. Probably lower DPS though due to loss of CoA.

Cast sequence 3:
Same as above except changing to CoD.

corruption(1.5 gcd), CoD(1.5 gcd),
1.5 cast UA/SL(1.5 gcd), 1.5 cast Immolate, 1.5 cast Haunt, 11.5 seconds until UA runs out (start next UA cast at 11 sec)
1.5 cast UA, 1.5 cast Immolate, 1.5 cast Haunt, 12 seconds until UA runs out (start next UA cast at 10.5 sec)
1.5 cast, UA/SL(1.5 gcd), 1.5 cast Immolate, 1.5 cast Haunt, 10.5 seconds until UA runs out
1.5 cast UA, 1.5 cast Immolate, 1.5 cast Haunt, 12 seconds until UA runs out
1.5 cast CoD
1.5 cast, UA/SL(1.5 gcd), 1.5 cast Immolate, 1.5 cast Haunt, 10.5 seconds until UA runs out
1.5 cast UA, 1.5 cast Immolate, 1.5 cast Haunt, 12 seconds until UA runs out

At the “wait times” I can Life Tap, Drain Life, Shadow Bolt.

The recast of CoD actually causes 1.5 seconds of downtime in the third cast of Siphon Life, fifth cast of UA, and fifth cast of Immolate.

Speccing into “Amplify Curse” drops this down to only 1 second of downtime.

  • Since Haunt increases your DoT damage by 20%, why not start with Haunt instead?

    Abigores last blog post..Improving Dispersion.

  • For sequence 2: There is the loss of DPS from CoA, but CoEl increases your spell damage done to the afflicted target – which is all our damage. Not just for us either, but for the other people shooting at the mob.

So, while personal DPS -may- be lower (the question if the % increase in damage is equal to CoA over the long run… I don’t know, I’m not a theorycrafter!), the overall DPS of your raid would be higher, wouldn’t it?

I was playing around with this as well, even cut out pieces of paper with cast times and durations and played around.

Very similar to your Curse of the elements rotation I placed Haunt first which resulted in after placing my last dot, I had hang time to life tap about 1 sec before the haunt came slamming back healing me back to full. Worked really well!

I know! wait a week and check in at Elitest Jerks.
They will probably throw some quantum physics at the rotation, and make it come out golden.

  • I also like Haunt on the leading edge of my rotation for the 20% applied to all my DoTs. An added bonus is that it will grab a target for you (when encountering gankers), where we had to wait for a DoT tick before or hit a s-bolt (not all that cool, I know, but somewhat pleasureable).

Great job with minimizing downtime though. :-)

I also try to avoid immolate as I think it hurts my DPS in the long run. Did you ever come to a conclusion with your crazy maths on that spell’s inclusion/exclusion?

  • Nibuca

Crazy math hasn’t occurred yet.. I really don’t want to do it for 70 when we’re going to be leveling in 2 weeks anyway. I’m planning to wait for 80 to mathify the rotations.

  • Good thing I have “Unending Breath” :-)

  • Soulhunt

    What do you thing about..

    CoE > Haunt > Corruption > Shdwbolt > Haunt > Shdwbolt > Haunt

..i think you could leave out UA, since it’ll only give you GCD..

    CoE > Haunt > UA > Corruption > Shdwbolt > Haunt > UA > Shdwbolt > Haunt > UA

  • Nibuca

It depends on whether you’re talking about a trash rotation or a boss rotation. Honestly, it feels like you’re leaving a lot of potential damage untouched on the table.

Everything’s still in flux.. so I can’t yet say what will work best.
