(Deprecated) Warlock Hit Rating

On TargetDEPRECATED! This information has changed as of patch 3.1. Please see the updated page about hit rating.

Unlike melee combat, it seems that spells are on a two roll system for hit and crit. The system rolls once to see if you hit.. and then rolls again to see if you crit. This means that if you can’t hit, you can’t crit. The number one easiest way to increase your DPS is to cut down on the number of spell misses(which is different from “resists”).

Your hit rate is a combination of your level vs the mob’s level with hit rating sprinkled over it. Miss rates are different in PVP.

In the bad old days casters could only ever get to 99% hit rate on spells. There used to always be a 1% chance for the mob to resist. In patch 3.0.2 this 1% always-miss was removed.

Suppression, a talent at the top of the affliction talent tree reduces your chance to miss with Affliction spells by 1% per talent point (up to 3/3 for 3%). Note, this only effects Affliction spells. Your Destruction and Demonology spells will be unaffected.

Cataclysm, a talent at second tier of the destruction talent tree reduces your chance to miss with Destruction spells by 1% per talent point (up to 3/3 for 3%). Note, this only effects Destruction spells. Your Affliction and Demonology spells will be unaffected

NOTE: Neither of these talents effect demonology. Soul Shatter is a demonology spell. There’s really nothing worse than using Soul Shatter.. and having it resisted.

At 70, 12.625 hit rating = 1% hit
At 80, 26.23 hit rating = 1% hit

In her skivvies (with neither suppression nor cataclysm), at level 80 Lilac’s spells will hit a level 80 mob 96% of the time.
This means she needs to “make up” 4% of hit. That’s 105 (26.23*4) hit rating for her to never miss.

In her skivvies (with neither suppression nor cataclysm), at level 80 Lilac’s spells will hit a level 83 mob (or skull level boss mob) 83% of the time. This means she needs to “make up” 17% of hit. That’s 446 hit rating for her to never miss (26.23*17).

If Lilac has 3/3 in suppression then her Affliction spells will hit a level 83 mob 86% of the time. Her Destruction and Demonology spells will still only hit 83% of the time. In order to reach 100% with her affliction spells she’ll need to get 368 hit rating (14*26.23). At that point her destruction and demonology spells will be at 97% hit rate.

If Lilac has 3/3 in suppression and 3/3 cataclysm then her Affliction and Destruction spells will hit a level 83 mob 86% of the time. Her Destruction and Demonology spells will still only hit 83% of the time. In order to reach 100% with her affliction and destruction spells she’ll need to get 368 hit rating (14*26.23). At that point her demonology spells will be at 97% hit rate.

In order to hit 100% of the time with all of her spells Lilac will need 446 hit rating. At that point she will no longer need to put any points into Suppression or Cataclysm for their bonuses to hit (these talents have other bonuses that may still make them worthwhile).

You wrote CoA twice in the Affliction section. Curse of Shadow no longer exists since Curse of the Elements now covers Shadow, Fire, Frost and Arcane.

Here are a few spells missing:

    Affliction Spells:
    Death Coil
    Haunt

    and

    Destruction Spells:
    Conflagrate
    Shadow Fury
    Chaos Bolt
    Shadowflame

  • Best picture ever, though you might be causing warlocks to intentionally skip on spell hit to make babies cry.

On a related note, wouldn’t it be neat if, when you “missed” a spell, it could fly off and hit something behind them?

Imagine PoM Pyro’ing some guy standing 70 yards away, or whiffing a Curse of Agony off into the air… only to strike some hapless bird.

Whoops. You’re right.. I’ve fiddled those numbers correct as well. Thanks for the good catch.

    And yes… 432 is HUGE!

Luckily Queklain at “The Stoppable Force” already has the “how to hit it” reference already available.

  • “If Lilac has 3/3 in suppression then her Affliction spells will hit a level 83 mob 97% of the time.”

I’m confused as how you got this number. If, at 80 you’re hitting an 83 mob 83% of the time, then you spec suppression which gives you 1% per point… 83%+3% = 86%. Am I missing something here? Are we to assume that your gear on Lilac accounts for the other 11%?

Other than that confusion on my part this is a great reference. I’m flabberghasted by now having to stack up to 432 hit… holy cow that seems like a lot.

    I’ve updated the article above.

Someone wrote me and noted that my hit rating number was different from.. everyone elses :P .

Thottbot listed 1% hit as 25.40 hit rating. I’ve written to them and asked them to update that page.
Wowwiki listed 1% hit as 26.32 hit rating. This is close to correct but not exact.
A friend who has an 80 has 75 hit rating and is getting 2.86% hit. So it looks like it’s 26.23 hit rating = 1% hit.

I’ve updated the above article to use 26.23 hit rating = 1% hit.

  • Ha, sneaky… I was just trying to do my own research as to why this is when I noticed… wait now they’re the same? Am I going crazy?

Thanks for the update! I’ll need to update my blog as well.

  • @arrens you need 158 spell hit to never miss in a heroic.. the 446 is only for raids. See here: http://tinyurl.com/warlockhit
