10k honor -> 1 epic gem
In Dalaran at Heroic badge vendor:
20 heroic badges -> 1 pure epic gem (red, yellow, blue)
10 heroic badges -> 1 hybrid epic gem (orange, purple, green)

Better deal, find your local alchemist, get one eternal, and 1 rare gem = 1 epic gem. I am slowly working on upgrading all my rare gems with epic for only about 50g (and maybe some WG grinding for eternals). For example: Dreadstone = 1 Eternal Shadow + 1 Twilight Opal.
