The “Noob 80″ Challenge

What is the DPS threshold of a “reasonably clued in” fresh 80 of your chosen class?

1. Identify and obtain a gear set that a “reasonable” new 80 could have. The “new” 80 has been questing. She has access to quest rewards, AH greens, BOE crafted items and any profession items. At this point I no longer have any of the old quest rewards so I’ll leave those out.
2. Gem these with blue/cheap gems
3. Enchant these with the cheap versions of the enchants.
4. Run heroics and test how you perform.

This has several benefits as far as I can see.. I’ll be able to setup a “new to 80″ gear list (which I’ve been meaning to do anyway), be able to say what kind of DPS I saw in that gear, and to assess what effect “gear” has on my dps.

I suppose if I’m ambitious I’ll setup a “all the heroic drops I want” gear list and test at that level too. I’ll wait and see how this first step works out.

You might also need a different spec to be efficient at this gear level. :)

  • IMO you go back to the standards that existed at the beginning of wotlk. 1500 dps min for a competent fresh level 80 in a heroic. From my experience dps in this type of gear should be from between 1800 to 2200 dps or higher. I don’t think there are any classes that are significantly weaker at lower gear levels assuming the player is properly geared (no attack power gems for a caster etc.).

I imagine too with the lfg system now that a fair amount of people will have reg instance drops on top of the questing gear so not sure if that has anything to do with your experiment.

  • Hmmm, this is an interesting one and something I might do for my mage tonight when she hit’s 80.

I have leveled her up for an arena team with a friends rogue, currently all she has is quest and crafted gear that is listed as BiS by lootrank for an 80 with no instance runs so it’s essentially the baseline for a mage at 80 entering instances for the first time.

Will do some testing on a training dummy first to see what optimum dps is against level 80 mobs and level 83 boss and then go run a few instances to get an overall dataset.

Should be interesting and give me a reason to log into my blog again :D
