4.0.3a Rotation Notes

I know we’re on the eve of a new patch.. and everything will change.. again.. but I wanted to get my notes down.

This is only concerning spell orders. Spec, Glyphs, pet choice, stats, gemming, enchanting and consumables are covered in my Affliction Cheatsheet (which I’m in the process of updating).

Any/all comments welcome.

Affliction:
(4.0.3a) Initial Cast
1. Curse of the Elements
2. Soulburn/Soul Fire for ISF buff
3. (if using Felhunter: Demon Soul) Haunt
4. Bane of Agony
5. Corruption
6. Unstable Affliction
7. (if using Succubus: Demon Soul) Shadowbolt or Drain Life as fillers

The initial order of the dots is largely unimportant. You will spend way more time upkeeping your casts and the initial order of application will not have that much of an effect. That said, if you are moving on initial cast it may be more beneficial to do your instant casts before your spells with cast time so you can apply those while getting into place for the fight.

Once your spells are up you need to refresh them appropriately.
– Always re-apply ISF even if you have to hard cast SF without a soul burn (will change with 4.0.6).
– Do not refresh Bane of Agony until it has finished ticking and fallen off. The last tick does significant damage and you will lose DPS by clipping this dot.
– Refresh Haunt as soon as it comes off of cooldown. This will also refresh Corruption.
– Refresh Unstable Affliction between the last and next-to-the-last tick (or when you’re moving via Fel Flames)

Refresh Priority Order:
1. Curse of the Elements
2. Soulburn/Soul Fire for ISF buff
3. (if using Felhunter: Demon Soul) Haunt
4. Bane of Agony
5. Corruption(if it has fallen off)
6. Unstable Affliction
7. Drain Soul (below 25%)
8. Shadowflame (if in range)
9. (if using Succubus: Demon Soul) Shadowbolt or Drain Life as fillers

If you are moving do one or more of the following:
– Soulburned Soul Fire
– Life Tap (if you need mana and aren’t too low on health)
– Refresh Bane of Agony (only if it has dropped, don’t overwrite ticks)
– Fel Flame (A little bit of damage + more UA)
– Refresh your Curse (if it’s in danger of dropping)
– Refresh corruption (anytime, if you have to move you might as well extend this duration)

Execute phase(boss below 25%):
1. Soulburn/Soul Fire for ISF buff
2. (if using Felhunter: Demon Soul) Haunt
3. Bane of Agony (only if it has dropped)
4. Drain Soul (below 25%)

Interrupt Drain Soul to keep ISF up or to refresh Haunt or cast Bane of Agony.

It seems that the Felhunter is a better pet to have at the 25% mark. It may be worthwhile if you have a spare shard to insta-summon your felhunter during execute phase.

Also keep in mind: you get 3 shards per fight.. but you can get all 3 of these back if you are using Drain Soul on an Add that dies.

  • Great cheat sheet Nibs! Really nails it without being “too strict”. It’s a personal pet peeve of mine that ‘locks seem to get too focused on the “set up” and don’t pay enough attention to, you know, the rest of the fight. You balance things well here by telling what’s best without failing to mention other valid options (and subtle urges to use your brain!).

    Well played, madam. :-)
