Affliction Warlocks and Patch 3.3

math (1)I need some serious face-time with SimulationCraft. Right now I’m just taking my best stab at Affliction and running on gut feeling but I’m starting to feel the need for some firm hard mathification.

Open questions:
– My rule of thumb for CotEl has always been “if 3+ people benefit from it in the raid and it wasn’t covered by other buffs”, then I’d cast it. Rarely do we have both happen so normally I’m casting CoA. I’ve always believed that CotEl was a DPS loss for me.. but a potential DPS gain for the raid. Kring, on a comment on the last post, said that if the other buffs aren’t present (Earth&Moon or Ebon Plaguebringer) then CotEl is a buff to -my- personal DPS over CoA. This is news to me. Must investigate. If that -is- the case then I need to setup a couple of new PowerAuras to make sure I have it up when it’s needed. Does CoD ever factor in (aside from casting it on Razorscale as she flies up)?
– Need to re-calculate my pawn scales based on 3.3 algorithms and Glyph of Quick Decay.
– I -think- Felpuppy is the best pet.. but is he better than Doomguard? Should I use Doug when not on cooldown or stick with Fzygwhateverhisnameis? Is it worthwhile to throw down Infernal for last 30% of the fight and replace the felpuppy.. or should I only summon infernal if the felpuppy dies?
– With Shadow bolt refreshing Corruption.. should I be waiting until Haunt is nearly ended before re-casting it? I think so as that means I will have less casts/fight and free up a GCD for other spells.
– When RL calls out for everyone to “burn cooldowns” WTH am I supposed to do? Usually I just sit up straighter and think mean thoughts. Srsly.. I guess I could pop a Haste Pot.. but should I stack that with anything else? Both trinkets and my back enchant are proc based, not trigger based.. so I’m at a loss.

Early Christmas for Affliction

A while back I wrote the following:

Thing 2: Dots, Hots and Haste
Some Hots/Dots may benefit from haste by ticking faster.

Verdict: Mixed. If your dot ticks faster it ends sooner meaning you have to recast it more. For warlocks they’re talking about doing this by having a glyph that makes your Corruption tick faster. I’m interested to see how the Glyph works with Everlasting Affliction. I re-cast haunt whenever it’s off cooldown.. and casts of haunt continually refresh corruption.. so potentially if my haunt casts are still fast enough to keep corruption refreshed.. then “faster ticks” just translates to more DPS. Though it also means that if I’m slow about putting haunt up I lose both haunt and corruption more often.

Now.. if they’d just update Everlasting Affliction to refresh based on casts of Shadow Bolt.. THEN we’d be in business.

How to Gem via Flowchart: Affliction Warlock Edition

I stumbled across this flowchart at Righteous Defense and I thought it was brilliant and had to copy the idea for myself.

Pretty Trinket

montres_steampunk_1Trinkets scare me. I mean they’re lovely bits of sparkle that have tasty buffs on them.. but for some reason, I have a very hard time telling if trinket A is better than trinket B. I blame the proc. For some reason the proc part of the trinket just scares me. The math of the proc just makes my eyes cross.

Here’s an example:
Sundial of the Exiled vs Abyssal Rune vs Embrace of the Spider

They’re all so similar.. and I just get confused. Which two should I use?

Sacred Shield: Fact vs Fiction

The Pally’s Sacred Shield is a squirrley little spell.

Each time the target takes damage they gain a Sacred Shield, absorbing 500 damage and increasing the paladin’s chance to critically hit with Flash of Light by 50% for up to 6 sec. They cannot gain this effect more than once every 6 sec. Lasts 30 sec. This spell cannot be on more than one target at any one time.

So.. you cast it on a target.. and then after the target is hit(melee or spells work) the first time it proc’s a shield on the target that will prevent some damage (500 + Casting pally’s sp * .75). While the shield is up you get an increase 50% crit on your Flash of Lights.

Yeah, easy for you to say.. but there’s still alot of muddy parts.

Holy Pally Toolbox

ToolboxLately I’ve been healing on my Pally. Don’t tell our raid leaders.. {shifty eyes} but I’ve had fun. I’m not saying that I’m shelving my warlock (far from it) but occasionally I can have fun while healing an instance on my Pally.

Following is a thought exercise for me based on my glyphs/spec. Feel free to follow along… or not… :)

Life Tap + Pet Attack Macro

Woot! So it turns out I can add life tap to my pet attack macro.

Pet Attack:

/target [help] targettarget
/petattack [target=pettarget,noexists] target
/cast [nochanneling] life tap(rank 1)
/stopmacro [target=pettarget,noexists]
/petfollow

If my target is friendly to me (ie, the tank) use my target’s target and ..
If I’m not currently channeling another spell, Life tap (rank 1) (because I have the [...]

Warlockery: By the Numbers

I just want to start off by saying: I’m a bad bad blogger. I’m thrilled to death when I get email from a reader.. but unfortunately it’s taken me -way- to long to respond to this one.

A while back I got an email from Megan.

Megan wrote:
Hi there, I was reading your blog today and looking at the list of lock gear available from 10′s 25′s etc and I couldn’t figure out how you got your point values on each item as well as for the slot, is there another post I’m missing that explains the point system used?

I wanted to answer Megan immediately.. but the quick answer wasn’t going to be the full answer and really that question needed a full answer. Add to that, the numbers I used originally to generate those lists are no longer completely correct since 3.1 fiddled our values around. I’m currently working on updating those lists.

Sokay. Here goes. The numbers in my gear lists are based on the pseudopoints I calculated for the gear based on the output from Simulationcraft and implemented in the addon PAWN and lootranks/wowhead.
