Warlockery: Affliction very short term damage

trashThe following is -only- important when you’re single targeting trash that’s going to die very quickly. In a boss fight the loss of one tick is frankly insignificant. If you are part of the “trash is not important” camp.. feel free to skip this entry.

Anyway. Right now as an Affliction Warlock, if I have a single targeted mob I’ll use three spells (in no particular order) Haunt, Corruption and Shadow Bolt.

Affliction Spec for 3.1

afflictionlogo11Ok. So I’m finally playing with the “final” spec trees. Here’s what I came up with on my first pass: 54/0/15 +2

Most of the point feel like “Well duh, of course I need to spend points here”. But as I thought about it some more I noticed that there are a few possible quibbles:

Warlockery: what was, what is, and what will be

Dan left a comment on my “Singing the praises of Raider101” post that reminded me that warlockery is evolving very quickly and a lot of the web-side documentation isn’t keeping up. So I want to address a few possibly misconceptions. I’m going to look ahead a little bit to the changes coming in 3.1 and include that under the “what will be” part of each note.

0/0/0 ?

Does it make me a sad and compulsive blogger that I’m actually considering spending 1k g just so I can have a 0/0/0 spec to flip into for testing out spells without hurting my [...]

WWS and the Affliction Warlock

Go read this by Candian Pimp on the Warlock’s Den: How to analyze your WWS reports as Affliction

In this post I’m going to examine my performance in the fight last night where we downed Patchwerk. Here’s the full WWS from last night: Naxx-25 3/4. We downed Patchwerk and then wiped a bunch on Grobbulus.

After you’re hit capped, the easiest way to increase your damage done to a boss is to increase your time on the boss.

Sliding Tiles

Did you ever play with one of these sliding number puzzles? You start off with all the numbers in order.. and the blank in the bottom right-hand corner.. and you give it to a 3-year-old to play with for an hour.. and it comes back all scrambled. So then you have to spend time trying to unscramble what the three-year-old had scrambled.

Often you’ll get 1, 2 and 3 in the right place.. but 4 and 5 are in the totally wrong place. Eventually you have to move 2 and 3 out of their proper place in order to get 4 and 5 to go into the right place. When you do it.. a little voice in the back of your head is just screaming.. “THEY’RE IN THE RIGHT PLACE DON’T MOVE THEM!!!” and “OMG NOW IT’S ALL SCREWED UP. YOU’RE NEVER GOING TO FIGURE IT OUT NOW”. But eventually, with a lot of perseverance you do get it unscrambled.

This is what I feel like is currently going on with the Warlock class. (see this -is- related to Wow.. try to keep up)

Disconnect

Rogues can now buy poisons from a vendor instead of having to mix them up themselves. Blizz didn’t want poisons and their reagents to clutter their bags.
Hunters can now stack a b-zillion arrows/bullets into one bag slot. Blizz doesn’t want ammunition to clutter their bags.

Warlocks can now gather soul stones whenever they use [...]

It’s the end of the world as we know it

Panic now and get it over with.

Done yet? How about now?

Ok. Now we can talk. Any long-time reader of the blog should be suitably surprised. I’m going to do something I’m pretty sure I’ve never done before.. that is, on the day that patch notes are released I’m going to mull them over and contemplate the implications for affliction warlocks.

I’m totally making this crap up. So be prepared.

Affliction Pet

I’m totally and utterly jealous of Hunters. I mean I totally -get- that I’m not spec’d demonology.. so I shouldn’t expect much dps out of my pet… but SERIOUSLY!! seeing a Recount.. where the hunter’s pet is out DPSing half the DPSers.. and my felpuppy is bumping along at 330 (it’s better since 3.0.8 where he was lucky to break 150) I’m totally and utterly jealous.
